"The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises."
The above quote is from Solomon, King of Israel, and can be found in Ecclesiastes chapter 1 verse 5. It's right in the thick of a good long rant about how everything under the sun is meaningless. Nothing new is discovered that hasn't been there a good long time before and great people of one generation are largely forgotten by the next. Whenever I read an excerpt out of Ecclesiastes I also keep "the conclusion of the matter" close to mind as well. I'll go ahead and let you read it if it is unfamiliar to you on your own. You can find it in chapter 12 and especially in the last two verses.
For now I am rather focused on the sun rising and setting and then rising again. The 24 hours we commonly refer to as "today". I suppose I could rattle off several statistical bits informing us of all the things that happen in a single day but for me that is something of a disconnect. I've been reading a book that is reminding me that each day is not only a measure of time but also a remarkable gift given to each and every one of us without any kind of favoritism. (I will remind myself to write a short review of it soon.)
Today isn't just a general and impersonal gift to the masses, it is also mine to receive as a loving and thoughtful touch from my Heavenly Father.
Today I woke up and peeled open my eyes to show them that the sky is rather blue.
Today every part of my body seems to be functioning just as God intended it to.
Today I enjoyed seeing my children eat breakfast and play with their friends who my wife is babysitting today.
Today that same wife (as if there were any other) made a point of expressing her love for me before jetting off to do what needs doing. We shared a valuable and needed moment.
Today I received some hard news.... and there's still lots of "today" left so I may get more.
Today I know that Jesus loves me more than I understand or can fathom. This is real and I am aware of it although I can't explain it. It is just true.
Today I will sign my name on enough documents to develop some sort of a syndrome. This will mark the end of one very long process, revive the hands of laborers and launch the next chapter of this adventure as a church. (Whooooop Wooooo! Let the building be built!)
Today I will watch my son play baseball.
Today I eat food because of God who provides.
Today, before I once again shut my eyes my wife and I will digest the things that have happened. The frustrations and the celebrations, the victories and the defeats, the plans and the realities; all of these things that make up today.
Today, I will thank the Lord.
Today, at some point I will let sleep overtake me as the sun, "hurries back to where it rises."
Yes, today has already been and will continue to be my personal gift from the Lord.
What is it to you?
Tim

Re: Today
I love reading Ecclesiastes because sometimes I feel just like Solomon(when one gets older, one tends to reflect on life) And like Solomon, I come to the same conclusion. "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil" I'm thankful for God's Word that brings me truth and for Christ, the Word of Life. So, 'Today' for me is a chance once again to "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" [Today] is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." And 'Today'is another day to love the Lord my God with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my mind and with all my strength...and love my neighbor as myself" And 'Today' , when I fall short, His grace is sufficient, for His power is made perfect in weakness"

Thanks for taking it to the next level CP! I love how the Scriptures bring perspective to life.
