Every once in a while I will come across a book either because someone recommended it to me or I stumbled across it and it genuinely moves me. When this happens I feel so inclined as to recommend it to people in a particular situation or in general mostly because I want them to be as blessed by it as I have been. When an author challenges, motivates, moves, touches, reveals something personal or opens my eyes I feel as though I'm the luckiest guy around. One such example is a book entitled, A Grace Disguised, by Jerry Sittser.
Jerry does two things incredibly well throughout the book. The first is that he tells his story with clarity, honesty and emotion. He is writing the book just 3 years after losing his mother, wife and daughter in an accident caused by a drunk driver. He recounts the episode itself as well as the grieving process in such a way that I felt as though I was going through it right there with him. I have not endured catastrophic loss and so I can't fully understand what that entails but I now have a much better picture of what grieving looks like. Feelings of loneliness, loss, anger and revenge are dealt with transparently. I was struck by his awareness of his own needs and the steps he took to avoid things like bitterness.
The second thing Jerry Sittser does is to point the reader to Christ. He is a scholar and with that comes the ability to think logically. He is a follower of Jesus and with that comes wisdom and perspective that turned my thoughts toward Jesus several times along the way. There are a few "dictionary moments" but they are not common and his writing is easy to understand. He asks hard questions concerning God's love and God's power in the midst of tragedy. He also moves away from the cliche, "christianeze" answers and instead toward the realities of life.
As I said earlier, I have not experienced catastrophic loss but I was incredibly blessed by reading this book. For those of you have gone through things like being fired, divorce, losing a loved one, a permanent loss of health or any other situation in which life will not continue the way it once was, I highly recommend that this book be a part of your process. It is well worth the money and if someone wants to borrow my copy just let me know!
Be encouraged!
